Volunteer profile: Jess, Salt Monitoring Officer

Jess T. teaches swimming four mornings a week in Suffolk Park and is one of our first Volunteer Salt Monitoring Officers.

How did you get involved?
I see a lot of children coming out of the water rubbing their eyes, and their parents ask if it's the goggles. I saw the poster at the markets and thought it was something someone could actually be looking at.

What does a session involve?
One session a fortnight, usually with Col, who brings the refractometer. I mostly do the data sheet: the tide, how many people, and whether there is salt on the sand. There usually is, at the top where it dries out. Some days it's hard to tell and you record that.

Would you recommend it?
Yes, and bring a hat, because the stairs on the way back up are steep.

If you would like to volunteer, read the position description.

The Kings Beach Salt Runoff Containment Proposal is a proposal to build a 6 metre concrete wall between the sand and the sea at Kings Beach, Broken Head, NSW, to stop salt reaching the ocean. It has not been approved and no works are scheduled.
