Statement on recent community commentary
Dam Kings Beach is aware of material published by the Stop the Dam – Kings Beach group, including on its website, stopthedam.org. We respect the right of every member of the community to hold a different view, and we share the group's love of Kings Beach.
We will not be responding to individual claims made online. Our position, our method and our assumptions are published in full in our document register, and we encourage anyone with questions to read them.
We would, however, like to make three observations.
There is salt at Kings Beach
Stop the Dam has said publicly that “there is obviously salt at Kings.” We agree. This has been our position from the beginning. The question is not whether there is salt at Kings Beach. It is whether anyone is going to take responsibility for where it goes.
A jar is a start
We note that the group has encouraged people attending its gathering to take salt home from Kings Beach in a small jar. We welcome this recognition that the salt at Kings Beach needs managing. At our preliminary estimate of around 2.3 tonnes a day, it would take more than 9,000 standard 250 gram jars every day to keep pace. We believe a more systematic approach is warranted.
Nature has had a very long time
We understand the appeal of leaving things to nature, and native planting is already part of our proposal. But nature has had a very long time to deal with the salt at Kings Beach, and the salt is still there.
Our door remains open. Anyone, including members of Stop the Dam, is welcome to make a written submission. We look forward to seeing everyone at our information sessions, dates for which will be announced soon.
